Dr Richard Wilson Mullock,
MD (Dublin) - Surgeon. Before
setting up in Southwold he served as a surgeon in
the Boer Wars. Southwold is his first and only general
practice; he is to serve the community for the next
25 years as one of just two community doctors.
He becomes Honorary Medical Officer of Health to Southwold
Hospital where, according to his obituary in the
BMJ, he performed his most important work: "To
serve this institution he had trained himself in operative
surgery and in radiology and, for many years, his
beds were kept full with patients sent for operation
from the surrounding districts. He devoted himself
heart and soul to the hospital and its welfare was
his chief hobby."
In 1909 Dr Mullock and Southwold's
other GP, Dr Basil Hubert Howard Tripp at No
65 High Street were at the centre of an extraordinary
professional row with another practitioner, culminating
in libel action which received extensive coverage
in the British Medical Journal. To read about it,
